Throne Room: A Modern Victorian Oasis in the Heart of Hong Kong

A Contemporary Aura Blended with Boudoir Vibes

The Throne Room is a testament to the designer's vision of juxtaposing the old and the new. The plethora of marbles, carefully selected and applied, goes beyond the traditional English style, creating a patterned application that is accentuated by touches of brass. The clever use of arches enhances the presentation of the space, complemented by the Victorian-inspired, Orac-molded ceiling throughout. This combination creates a sense of fluidity and spaciousness, optimizing the ergonomics of the room.

Designed to harmonize with the city backdrop, the Throne Room evokes a nostalgic, pre-industrialization era where extravagant materials were utilized with humility and adaptability. The integration of an in-built lighting and sound system further reinforces the room's ambitious attempt to blend the old and the new seamlessly.

What sets the Throne Room apart is its ability to achieve a bonafide mishmash of a modern Victorian style while still serving the functions of a contemporary office environment. Each area within the room is designed with a specific function in mind, yet unified through the motif of brass. This multi-purpose space effortlessly transitions from a reception area to a workspace to an entertainment space, all while maintaining a cohesive design language.

The attention to detail in the Throne Room is evident in the director's room, where grandiose design elements come together. UMU glass lines the sides of the walls, reflecting the metropolitan skyline, while a fireplace cum TV unit is meshed with brass netting, punctuating the continuous lines of the wooden floor. The overall unity of an English setting is undeniably achieved through the careful selection of visual elements, including the iconic Poltrona Frau sofa.

The realization of the Throne Room required meticulous craftsmanship and installation. The Orac-molded ceilings, with their curved design, were tested on-site multiple times to ensure a flawless application. The result is a visually stunning space that opens up a vast spatial expanse, allowing the eye to breathe through the intricate Victorian patterns.

Designed by Louie Shum and Steven Chan, the Throne Room project began in August 2016 and was completed in June 2017. Its unique blend of modern and Victorian styles has garnered recognition, earning it the Iron A' Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
